Industrial Sliding Curtains: How They Work, Where They're Used, and What to Look For

What Are Industrial Sliding Curtains?

Industrial sliding curtains are heavy-duty curtain systems mounted on overhead tracks that allow panels to slide open and closed. They provide the containment benefits of a wall with the accessibility of a door — ideal for high-traffic areas where forklifts, vehicles, or personnel need regular access.

How They Work

The system consists of three components:

1. Track — Mounted to the ceiling, wall brackets, or free-standing frame. Available in standard, heavy-duty, and galvanised options.

2. Curtain panels — Custom-fabricated PVC panels with reinforced edges, hung from the track via roller carriers.

3. Hardware — Roller carriers, end stops, overlap seals, and optional features like floor sweeps and vision panels.

Operation is manual (push/pull) in most applications. Motorised options are available for very large or frequently operated curtains.

Where They're Used

- Loading docks — weather protection while maintaining vehicle access - Production zones — separating manufacturing stages - Wash bays — containing water and chemicals - Welding areas — UV and spark containment with access - Cold storage entries — maintaining temperature while allowing traffic - Warehouse divisions — creating zones with full access capability

Choosing the Right System

Key decisions when specifying a sliding curtain system:

Material: Heavy-duty PVC for most applications, clear PVC for visibility, mesh for airflow

Track type: Standard for light-medium use, heavy-duty for frequent operation or heavy panels, galvanised for corrosive environments

Mounting: Ceiling-mount is most common, wall-mount for partial openings, free-standing for areas without structural mounting points

Features: Vision panels for safety, floor sweeps for sealing, overlap strips for better containment
